Enjoy one day on a luxury yacht to dive in Taurito Caves, Taurito Reef and Araganz wrecks
Taurito Caves
As an extension of Taurito Reef, the caves of Taurito are a wonderful dive with much marine life and also the most amazing rock formations, canyons and caves to swim in and around. We follow the coastline around to the caves and depending on tide we enter the caves and surface inside to take a look. Thousands of years ago the lava flow, which hit the ocean and cooled, formed these wonderful caves. We do this dive is two ways, either entering and exiting at the beach in Taurito, or entering the water at Puerto Mogan and doing a drift dive all the way back to Taurito. Either way the dive is around 50-60 minutes, really relaxing and diverse with natural and man-made rock formations. The marine life is similar to Taurito reef with the added bonus of the occasional Sting Ray or Common Ray flying majestically by or sleeping in the sandy patches. Moray Ell’s pop their heads out from the rocks, jacks fish dart in and around the rocks trying to catch some tasty fish unawares and Stargazer’s can be spotted nestled in the sand staring at the surface.
Taurito Reef
Our House Reef, well what can I say. Taurito has been home since 1998 and we dive this reef pretty much every day and we still have great experiences on it. The reef itself has an abundance of life, which is surprising considering the proximity to the beach. We get kitted up at the equipment room and head down to the beach to enter the water, it is a short swim to the ‘Baby Reef’ where we do most of our Discover Scuba Diving program and the in-water training for our PADI courses. Snorkelers love this reef for its shallow depth and closeness to shore allowing hours of lazy floating around. The reef is about 5m at this point, with the natural reef formation lying right next to the artificial reef, which was laid some years ago and has become home to much marine life, which increases year by year.
As we continue down the reef the depth slowly increases to a maximum of 10m with large boulders lying on a sandy bottom. We normally do around 45 minutes on this dive and exit back to the beach The reef abounds with all types of fish life, small shoals of Roncador and Sardine, with a few Trumpet Fish and Garrdfish moving in and around the large boulders on the reef. An assortment of Bleny, Weever, Wide-eyed flounder, Scorpion and Lizardfish hover around the sand and reef area as well as the beautiful Sharpnose Puffer and Brown Puffer. Cuttlefish and Octopus are frequently seen and on occasion baby Angel Shark and Butterfly Ray hide under the sand.
The Araganza – Mogan
The first of the two wrecks sunk by the Yellow Submarine company, lying only minutes away from Puerto Mogan and the dive centre in Taurito. This wreck has been down since the early 1990’s and time has taken its toll with the many storms we have experienced in those years. However the wreck is bursting with life and has its resident massive shoal of Roncadors and Barracuda as well as the many Trumpet fish, Damsel and Puffers that go about their business daily. On occasion Canarian lobster set up camp and Moray Eels and Octopus pop out of the tangled wreck. In mid water you will see Sardine darting back and forth and Amberjack chasing them. Turtle, large Rays and even visit from Manta Ray and Wahoo have graced the water in and around this lovely wreck.
There are two wrecks sunk at Mogán, they were both sunk for the Submarine tours, which leave from Mogán Harbour. The old wreck is now broken up, but the new one is a large fishing vessel and they are both at a depth of 19m. They are covered in marine life as the Submarine tour feeds the fish over the wrecks to attract them for the tourists. The marine life has everything possible in large numbers and we try to time the dive so that the Submarine is there at the same time. How cools that!!!
